Something that we have been doing in 3Ds max and using modifiers that change the shapes and sizes of how they look to make them fit into what you want them to to look like. You still have the ability to change them back, it can be a bit time consuming for you to just play around with the modifiers finding the right one. Even though I didn't put much time into the shapes you can see how much more useful it can be then using edit poly. Next I created a lamp that was made by using squeeze, melt, and a few other modifiers that help me create the base of the lamp that gave that hour glass shape Then I used the twist modifier to create a string effect on the lamp and used a twist for the torus's as well to make it look like it was bend around the top of the lamp.
